In the fall of 1883, three Canadian Pacific Railway construction workers stumbled across a cave containing hot springs on the eastern slopes of Alberta's Rocky Mountains. From that humble beginning was born Banff National Park, Canada's first national park and the world's third. Spanning 6,641 square kilometres (2,564 square miles) of valleys, mountains, glaciers, forests, meadows and rivers, Banff National Park is one of the world's premier destination spots.

Banff National Park Admission

By choosing to participate in the Winterstart 5 Mile Night Run in Banff National Park, you and your guests are helping to preserve over 6,600 sq km of valleys, mountains, glaciers, forest, meadows and rivers for future generations through the purchase of a required Park Pass. When your guests pre-purchase a Park Pass on line, the sometimes long line ups at the Park Gates are avoided. Please ask your guests to visit to pre-purchase their pass.

Nature Rules in Banff

We are very fortunate to be able to hold this event in such a pristine, picturesque environment as Banff National Park. Along with the wild nature and grand beauty of this natural mountain environment, comes the possibility that some events may be have to altered, delayed or postponed to protect ‘sensitive wildlife’ in the park. We all must understand should any elk, moose, sheep, goats, bears, wolves, cougars, lynx or wolverines be observed along the route by event participants, the event will stop at that location and all participants/race staff will stay or retreat to a safe distance (30 m for the first 4 herbivores, 100 m for the remaining 5 carnivores). Race staff will immediately inform Parks Canada staff of the sighting and Parks Canada will send someone to the site who can assess the situation and who will determine whether or not the event can proceed, and under what conditions.
